Desktop Engineer

General Summary of Duties:

The Desktop Engineer will be tasked with ensuring that network, Data, Voice, virtual environments, and application environment run at peak performance by detecting and acting on all exceptions and anomalies. This role monitors the entire Network environment and performs end-user support as needed. Collects performance statistics on the reliability and efficiency of networks. Incident tickets are generated for exceptions and managed for the lifetime of the incident. Troubleshoots and corrects all incidents when possible and escalates to higher level as needed. Detects outages and remedies. Operates with a high degree of independence and with minimal supervision. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Perform regular installations and updates for IT hardware and software systems. 
  • Manage regular backup, storage, and retrieval functions of critical data. 
  • Provide day-to-day server support to improve workflow. 
  • Maintain and troubleshoot network printers, network firewalls, network servers, telephone systems and other company networked systems. 
  • Upgrade and maintain computer anti-virus on the network to ensure data security and protection. 
  • Troubleshoot and resolve computer and other IT equipment problems and malfunctions. 
  • Provide troubleshooting for Google Mail/Drive/Calendar, Adobe Creative Suites, Microsoft Office Suites and other hardware and software applications. 
  • Manage administration of user accounts including email, remote access, etc. 
  • Assist in setting-up and upgrading computer systems for end users. 
  • Maintain and troubleshoot LAN/WAN connectivity issues. 
  • Provide end user application training as needed. 
  • Identify and resolve technical issues to reduce downtime. 
  • Provide IT support and service to end users. 
  • Monitor IT systems for proper operation and working conditions. 
  • Ensure all IT systems are working efficiently and optimally.
  • Report all concerns to the IT Director for direction and guidance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • Knowledge of TCP/IP and SNMP. Knowledge of ISP.
  • Knowledge of Routers and Network Protocols (Cisco).
  • Specialties NOC / Process writing skills or training a plus.
  • Experience in Network Monitoring & Implementation a plus.
  • Experience in current Internet network hardware and software technologies.
  • Experience with PC based tools and products, MSOffice suite.
  • Experience with VMware and VDI environment
  • Diagnostic experience of a variety of monitoring applications
  • Possesses superior Customer Service skills.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in a Help Desk or high volume call center preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working in IT Operations including knowledge of common tools, methods, and techniques
  • Minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible work experience in networks and/or server monitoring skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with routing protocols
  • Experience with server, switch, and desktop configuration and/or troubleshooting
  • Experience working within a cable provider environment
  • Experience working with third party circuit providers
  • Industry recognized certifications such as MCSE or CCNP required
  • Vendor certifications and experience with VMware preferred
  • SQL Scripting preferred

Preferred Education:

Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) from four-year accredited college plus 2 years of professional experience ; or five years of related experience and MCSE and/or CCNP certifications. 

Typical Physical/Mental Demands:

Requires mobility. Requires prolonged sitting. Eye/hand coordination and manual dexterity. Ability to distinguish letters, symbols, and colors. Ability to push and/or pull office equipment weighing five to fifty pounds.  Occasional travel may be required.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in an office environment.  Ability to tolerate varying conditions of noise level, temperature, illumination, and air quality.
